Brief is available in California. This page describes what the product does with your information today.

What you can keep private

A Brief you have not saved stays in your browser until you leave or refresh. Brief does not store it as a lead. If you turn on “Keep progress on this device,” your answers are also kept in this browser, on this device only, until you save the Brief, turn it off, or 30 days pass. Brief’s servers never receive that draft. Signing in and choosing Save is what stores a Brief with Brief.

What a saved Brief holds

Your email, the story, location, goal, practice-area label, lawyer preferences, optional summary, and optional clarifying questions. Story, location, goal, summary, and questions are encrypted before they are written to the database. The practice-area label, lawyer preferences, and dates are stored so your account can list Briefs and match them without opening the story.

Sending to a lawyer

A saved Brief is not sent to a lawyer unless you choose Send, or choose to share it in a conversation. The lawyer can then open that Brief and any documents attached to it, and sees later edits. Deleting the Brief removes their access as well. Messaging a lawyer does not by itself make them your lawyer.

Who opened your information

Brief keeps an audit log of who opened a Brief you shared, who downloaded your documents, and what Brief staff did. The log records who, what, and when, never the content. You can see the entries about your information under Account.

Advertising and analytics

Brief does not place advertising or analytics tags on what you write. Your story is not put in the page address, and it is not written to server logs.

Prepare with Brief

If you choose Prepare, the words on that page are sent to Brief's server to be organized. If an Anthropic key is configured, those words are also sent to Anthropic for that request. They are not used to build an ad profile. You can skip Prepare and still see your Brief.

Voice dictation

If you choose “Add by voice,” your browser’s speech recognition handles your audio and may send it to its speech service, run by the company that makes your browser or device. Brief receives only the resulting text, adds it to your answer, and does not receive or store the audio. Brief asks for your microphone only after you choose it, and typing always works.

Payments

Brief is free during launch and does not collect card numbers. Brief does not use what you write about your legal situation to target advertising.

Access, retention, and deletion

Sign in to read your saved Briefs. Delete a Brief, a document, or the account, and the saved copy is removed. You can also have Brief delete Briefs and loose documents you have not opened or changed in 6, 12, or 24 months; this is off unless you turn it on under Account. The sign-in cookie is only used to know that it is you. A second cookie remembers the language you chose.

Who else receives information

Brief uses a few service providers to run. Anthropic receives the words on the page when you choose Prepare, if an Anthropic key is configured. Resend delivers Brief's emails, so it receives your email address and the email itself. Cloudflare runs the bot check on sign-in, sign-up, and Prepare, and receives technical information from your browser to tell people from bots. When you set a password, Have I Been Pwned receives the first 5 characters of a scrambled form of it, never the password. The company that hosts Brief stores the encrypted data. Brief does not sell your information.

Do Not Track

Brief does not track you across other websites, and it does not let other companies use Brief to collect information about you across websites over time. Because of that, Brief works the same way whether or not your browser sends a Do Not Track signal.

Security

Connections to Brief are encrypted. Stories, summaries, messages, reviews, and documents are encrypted before they are stored. Lawyers see only what you choose to share with them.

Reviews

A review is public once Brief approves it. Brief does not show your name with it, but do not include details about your case.

Children

Brief does not ask for a separate profile of a child. Do not use it to collect a child's story.

Changes to this page

If this page changes, the new version is posted here with a new effective date. If a change affects how Brief uses information you already gave it, Brief emails account holders before the change applies.
